![]() ![]() Playing it safe and doing nothing will get you nowhere. If you’re stuck, you need to tiptoe out on a limb and lightly pen in some guesses, which undoubtedly will bust open the puzzle for you. And yes, I like to use a pen because it’s way more fun than using a pencil. I’ve made plenty of mistakes because of my sloppy handwriting or not going back over my answers. My twin sister’s eldest son is a doppelganger of Leonardo DiCaprio, so it’s fun to send my nephew memes of himself, er the actor. As an identical twin, I’m fascinated with the word. Thanks to crosswords, I also now know the meaning of "doppelganger": a biologically unrelated look-alike, or a double, of a living person. In Saturday’s New York Times puzzle, I was down to four blocks when I “cheated” (no cheating that’s another life lesson) and looked up “axolotyl,” an amphibian that rhymes with "bottle" in an Ogden poem. For example, one clue in a recent puzzle was “even things.” Instead of a plural noun, the answer was the verb "atone." Meanwhile, another recent clue was "biblical mount" and the answer wasn’t a mountain (like Sinai or Moriah), but a ride (“ass,” as in donkey). Mulling through the various meanings of words is imperative in solving crossword puzzles. My late father, who was inherently funny, practically spun an entire stand-up comedy routine over the fact that he, or someone else, read, in a camera’s instructions, the noun "wind" (like Oklahoma’s blowing down the plain) versus the verb "wind" (like twist). Make no assumptions and consider all angles in other words, a single word can have several meaningsĪ fond memory of my childhood was when I was a preteen celebrating Christmas with a slew of relatives at my maternal great-aunt’s home in Okay, Oklahoma. ![]() I’ve also learned to see through the tricks in the clues and to embrace other tricks, er life lessons, like these. ![]() ![]() Shrieker Zombies come to mind, new fodder enemies that will buff the demons around them when killed, meaning you’ve got to be careful if you’ve got a couple of Marauders around not to accidentally off one of these squishy bastards. While I quite liked the Armoured Baron, a hulking demon that needs to be weakened by Plasma Rifle fire or a well-placed shot during a power move before going in for the kill, some enemy variants are decidedly less fun. New enemy types like Stone Imps, Armoured Barons and Riot Soldiers all require new and specific tactics to take down, and the game continues its clever and relentless combination of enemies to keep you constantly cycling through your formidable arsenal. The gameplay by now ought to be extremely familiar, but there’s a few novel twists to keep things interesting (and difficult). This is not a negative, as the pace is excellent, never dwelling on one area long enough to make your mind start to wander amongst the hapless slaughter the goal feels always just within reach, the inexorable march of the Doom Slayer a guide and inspiration. ![]() Part Two is fairly bite-sized, weighing in at about three to four hours across three new locales. The story is there for those (like me) who love its compelling silliness, but even if you don’t fully comprehend the nitty gritty, you will nonetheless know that you’ve accomplished something momentous. What is relevant is that his demons are in your base, killing your dudes, and that’s not something to be abided by. Whether or not you’ve been following the fact that the Dark Lord (once a benevolent creator seeking to spare his creations the pain of death) was betrayed by a powerful race he created to find the answers to immortality is more or less irrelevant. ![]() Your goal here is incredibly simple: travel to the heart of Hell and partake in a cosmic biff with the King of Hell in a winner-takes-all slugfest that will either rid all realms outside of Hell of demons, or let them roam freely. I’ve remarked in all my reviews about the surprising depth of DOOM’s lore if you’re willing to throw yourself down the rabbit portal, and while Part Two certainly leans on that lore, it feels more focused and one-minded in how it handles the narrative. The Ancient Gods – Part One concluded in dramatic fashion, with the Dark Lord of Hell himself being revealed as basically a dark version of everyone’s favourite Doomguy. ![]() ![]() The strong, flexible materials of paracords also make for effective self defense items when properly knotted. Originally, on our HDR and RAW Course, we used Photomatix and HDR Efex Pro but when the Nik Collection became free, after Google stopped supporting it, we went over to just using the HDR Efex Pro. Thankfully, as the software has been updated, more natural results are obtainable today. Some people loved the new graphic comic book style of the presets but just as many hated them. Originally the early version both of these products resulted in rather vivid and unreal looking images which in turn stoked the fires of the HDR debate. HDR Software, Photomatix and HDR Efex Pro, came along a few years ago and automated this process. We didn’t call it HDR is those days but it was basically a way of managing high contrast subjects like landscapes when shooting towards the light. This lack of dynamic range as has always been an issue for photographers and I can remember, back in the early days of Photoshop, taking two images of the same subject, at different exposures (bracketing), and manually blending these layers together. Whatever your views the fact is in a very high contrast scenario it’s impossible for the digital camera, or film, to include the same range of contrast tones that we can see with the human eye. HDR has always been a hotly debated topic digital photography as some people thinks it’s cheating to manipulate images. ![]() ![]() ![]() The first page of the ASRM’s 2003 guide for patients noted that women in their late 30s had a 30 percent chance of remaining childless altogether. Flying to a friend’s wedding in May 2002, I finally forced myself to read the Time article. “Everyone does,” I replied solemnly, as his grandfather laughed quietly in the next pew.)īut, suddenly single at 30, I seemed destined to remain childless until at least my mid-30s, and perhaps always. (“Do you fart?” one of them asked me in an overly loud voice during the rehearsal. At a wedding I attended in my late 20s, I played with the groom’s preschool-age nephews, often on the floor, during the entire rehearsal and most of the reception. I frequently passed the time in airports by chatting up frazzled mothers and babbling toddlers-a 2-year-old, quite to my surprise, once crawled into my lap. Even when I was busy with my postdoctoral research, I volunteered to babysit a friend’s preschooler. “Should you have your baby now?” asked Newsweek in response.įor me, that was no longer a viable option. Female fertility, the group announced, begins to decline at 27. The previous fall, an ad campaign sponsored by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) had warned, “Advancing age decreases your ability to have children.” One ad was illustrated with a baby bottle shaped like an hourglass that was-just to make the point glaringly obvious-running out of milk. Just as you plan for a corner office, Hewlett advised her readers, you should plan for grandchildren. BABY IF YOU GIVE IT TO ME PROFESSIONALWithin corporate America, 42 percent of the professional women interviewed by Hewlett had no children at age 40, and most said they deeply regretted it. The panic stemmed from the April 2002 publication of Sylvia Ann Hewlett’s headline-grabbing book, Creating a Life, which counseled that women should have their children while they’re young or risk having none at all. A generation of women who had waited to start a family was beginning to grapple with that decision, and one media outlet after another was wringing its hands about the steep decline in women’s fertility with age: “When It’s Too Late to Have a Baby,” lamented the U.K.’s Observer “Baby Panic,” New York magazine announced on its cover. “Listen to a successful woman discuss her failure to bear a child, and the grief comes in layers of bitterness and regret,” the story inside began. Then my mother said, “Have you read Time magazine this week? I know you want to have kids.” When I finally broke the news, they were, to my relief, supportive and understanding. I put off telling my parents about the split for weeks, hesitant to disappoint them. After I accepted a tenure-track position in California and he turned down a postdoctoral research position nearby-the job wasn’t good enough, he said-it seemed clear that our living situation was not going to change. My husband and I had met in graduate school but couldn’t find two academic jobs in the same place, so we spent the three years of our marriage living in different states. In the tentative, post-9/11 spring of 2002, I was, at 30, in the midst of extricating myself from my first marriage. ![]() ![]() ![]() Set your treadmill to the appropriate miles per hour, and you’re all set. kilometers) Example running pace calculation.
